Radon is the leading environmental cause of lung cancer. Children are twice as susceptible to the negative impacts of radon than adults. Current and former smokers are ten times more susceptible. Children exposed to second-hand smoke are 20 time more susceptible to radon.

Given that radon may be present in homes across all of North Carolina's 100 counties, and questions residents may have about testing homes and water, the NC Radon program has created a new site to help provide answers. This guidance was created in partnership with the

North Carolina Geological Survey (NCGS),
the North Carolina Cancer Control Branch,
the North Carolina Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch,
the NC Division of Public Health State Health Improvement Plan program, and
the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
In addition to the 100 county guidance documents, the North Carolina Geological Survey has also created an interactive geological map regarding radon. We have developed a webpage that contains links to each county guidance document as well as a link to the NCGS interactive geological map.
